Fluent9 — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 14 July 2026

Fluent9 is a study aid for practising the speaking section of IELTS. We built it to collect as little data as possible. There are no accounts, no logins, and no advertising or analytics SDKs.

Your audio stays private

Your microphone is used only while you are recording a practice attempt. Audio is transcribed using Apple's Speech framework — on your device on devices that support on-device recognition (the vast majority). On devices that don't, Apple processes the audio to return the transcript, as covered by Apple's privacy policy. Your audio recordings are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to us.

What we send to our server

For the AI-scored criteria (Lexical Resource and Grammar), the Part 3 follow-up questions, and the model answers, the app sends the transcribed text of your attempt and the practice metrics computed on your device (for example speech rate and the estimated bands) to our scoring server. These requests are identified only by a random device identifier and a hardware-backed app check — never your name, email, or Apple ID. We use this data solely to generate your feedback. We do not sell it, use it for advertising, or build a profile from it.

Third parties

Our scoring server uses Anthropic's Claude API to judge vocabulary and grammar and to phrase coaching feedback; the transcript and metrics above are processed by Anthropic for that purpose. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple — we never see or receive your payment details.

Data retention

Your practice history, recordings, and any real exam scores you log are stored locally on your device. They are removed when you delete an attempt in the app or uninstall it. Requests to our server are processed transiently to return your feedback and are not used to build long-term records about you.

Your choices

You can decline microphone and speech-recognition permission at any time in iOS Settings (the app cannot score attempts without them). You can delete individual attempts and exam scores inside the app.

Children

Fluent9 is intended for adults preparing for an English-proficiency exam and is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy; the "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version.
